Unified Communications

What is Unified Communications?

So what is Unified Communications? Unified Communications is the use of various communication services such as video calling, instant messaging, web conferencing, audio conferencing, data sharing and electronic whiteboarding to name just a few. These communication services are used by individuals and organisations as tools to achieve a set aim and enable local and/or remote participation across various mediums.

The adoption of unified communications as a tool to promote business and learning has seen a massive growth due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Using unified communications services or video conferencing is fast becoming second nature to the office worker and student alike. The use of technology has enabled this to happen quickly and effectively, from any location, across any platform and from virtually any device.

The adoption of technology has been so rapid that it has been hard to control. Now more than ever, it is important to take stock of inventory and ensure that the tools employed by your organisation are appropriate, secure and fit for purpose. With so many organisations working with a mixture of on-site and remote staff, never before has technology been so crucial to the working environment in meeting, collaboration space and board rooms.

Unified Communications is available from multiple vendors and across multiple platforms The clear leaders are Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Webex and Google Meet. Manufacturers have produced technology optimised to work with these specific platforms and so making the correct choice has never been more important.

Workflow is another major factor and can determine the type of solution required. With a move to a more hybrid or flexible work methodology, the technology has to be flexible enough to accommodate. The use of a TeamsRoom or a ZoomRoom are being combined with more flexible connection methods as users switch to BYOD and BYOM options. These decisions can often determine the environment, whether in a traditional room, huddle space or home office, the technology will be different.
