How to make returning to the office more attractive than working from home!
Whilst the exhibition was in full swing, a key discussion took place at the Universal AV Sponsored Business Desk seminar, where panelists debated how to make returning to the office more attractive than working from home.
Sponsored by Universal AV, the session brought together experts from business, academia, and technology to discuss how collaboration, connectivity, culture, and comfort can turn the office into a place people want to be — not just somewhere they’re expected to show up.
Chaired by Michael Taylor, North West editor at TheBusinessDesk.com, the panel included Dr Helen Hughes of Leeds University Business School, Shelley Townend from Universal AV, Mark Grayson of RLB, and Sandip Khroud of Hill Dickinson. Each speaker brought valuable insights into how their organisations — and their clients — are reshaping workspaces to meet changing expectations.
Townend highlighted how video conferencing technology has vastly improved since the pandemic, but warned that poor design and platform mismatches still undermine hybrid collaboration. She stressed the need for AV systems and workspace design to be planned together, so technology genuinely enhances the work experience.
Dr Hughes focused on employee behaviour, noting that workers want flexibility and autonomy over where and how they work. “The genie is out of the bottle,” she said, explaining that while most people now prefer a hybrid approach, they expect time in the office to be purposeful — not just spent on remote calls.
Grayson shared how RLB redesigned its Leeds office to prioritise collaboration over desk space. “Instead of 60 desks, we now have 30 and more areas to work together,” he explained, adding that giving employees a say in when they come in makes a significant difference in morale and engagement.
Khroud echoed the value of flexibility, saying Hill Dickinson doesn’t mandate office attendance but has invested in a modern, welcoming workspace to encourage it. With breakout zones, silent rooms, and Teams-enabled meeting spaces, the new office has become a key tool in attracting and retaining talent. “Now, when we bring candidates in, showing them the space does half the job,” he said.
